Eyelash Extensions Q&A

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are a semi-permanent way to create fuller, thicker, and more defined eyelashes. Unlike false lashes, which are glued to your lash line and need to be removed within a short period, lash extensions are affixed to your natural lashes one at a time and remain in place until that eyelash sheds.

Like all hair, eyelashes go through several phases, including an active growth phase, transition phase, and shedding phase. Each of your lashes is in a different phase at any given time, which is why you don’t notice how many you lose during the shedding process.

Eyelash extensions comprise various materials, such as silk and faux mink, and create beautiful results.

How are eyelash extensions placed?

Your practitioner works with you to determine the results you hope to achieve with eyelash extensions. Some people want to fill out their lashes and create a natural-looking outcome, while others want a dramatic effect.

As you lie on the treatment table or chair, your practitioner carefully applies individual extensions to your natural lashes. A magnifying device and special light help ensure proper placement. All you have to do is relax and rest during your visit. Appointments can take 1-2 hours, depending on how many extensions you’re getting.

It’s important to avoid getting your lashes wet for 48 hours after your visit. You should resist urges to touch your new lashes, although you can admire your results as much as you like.

In the hands of a skilled practitioner, eyelash extensions are safe and effective. The glue used to affix your extensions should never touch your eyes, and improper placement can damage your natural lashes.

How long will my new eyelash extensions last?

The best way to preserve your effects is to avoid using oil-based products on your face or eyelashes. Oils will cause the glue to release your extensions. You can use mascara on the tips of your lashes, but your extensions will last longer if you don’t have to remove mascara frequently.

This means you can expect around six weeks of wear from a new set of eyelash extensions, although some lashes will shed before that point. You can always come in for a refill treatment to replace extensions that shed.
